Review

For those who don’t know the term lowcountry, it refers to the SE region of South Carolina near the coast but is often expanded to include Savannah and the surrounding areas.  It has its own culture, architecture, and, most importantly for this discussion, cuisine, which is features a lot of seafood and BBQ and has lot of deep American South, Caribbean, and African influences.  The thing it’s probably closest to is New Orleans/Cajun/Creole.

Eric Davis was focused on catering, but lucky for all of us, they opened this restaurant in a beautifully converted gas station and now everyone can sample the delicious flavors of the lowcountry.

Fried green tomatoes; chicken and andouille sausage gumbo; BBQ pork, brisket, and smoked chicken; fried shrimp; lowcountry boil with shrimp and sausage; fried oysters; fried or crab stuffed flounder… the menu is one hit after another and your problem will not be in finding something to eat, it will be finding the willpower to not eat it all.

The gumbo is as close to perfect as you’re going to get around here and the BBQ pork sandwich is a favorite, served with pickled onions and a tangy sauce on the most deliciously soft bun/roll hybrid that you’ll ever hope to find.

Prices are incredibly reasonable with only a couple of the bigger combo platters going over $20 and the service is excellent.

Located in the Thunderbolt neighborhood on the eastern side of town, it’s not within walking distance from the Historic District, but it is absolutely worth the driver or Uber.
