Review
Billing itself as the most complete antebellum railroad of its kind in the railroad, this sprawling facility is located in a former railyard just a couple of blocks from bustling Downtown Savannah.
Many of the buildings from its years as a railyard and repair shop are open for guests to explore but the real stars here are the trains themselves, from engines to passenger cars to cabooses and more of different eras. They even have a working steam engine and you can take a (very short) ride in a car being pulled by it at various times of the day.
There is also a fun HO gauge model railroad display in one of the buildings, a favorite spot for people who had them as kids.
Although its fantastic that this has all been preserved and restored, the experience itself is lacking a little bit in terms of context and background information, leaving the visitor to look at things more than learn from them, but it’s still a worthwhile diversion.
