Savannah Neighborhoods

First time (and even repeat) visitors to Savannah are wise to concentrate their stays on four areas: the Landmark Historic District, the adjacent Victorian District, The Starland District, and the Tybee Island beachfront.

The Landmark Historic District
Bound by the Savannah River on the north, Gwinnett Street on the south, Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. on the west, and Broad Street on the east, the Landmark Historic District is about a mile from side to side and a mile from top to bottom, so it is very walkable. This is where you’ll find the historic squares and the bulk of the shopping, dining, drinking, and sightseeing.

River Street on the north edge of the district is a very touristy but still charming cobblestone road between the river and the historic Factors Walk/Factors Row. You’ll find restaurants, bars, hotels, and lots and lots of souvenir shops. Nearby Bay Street is a major thoroughfare with several restaurants, bars, and hotels. A few blocks south you’ll find Congress Street, which is where most of the party-set likes to hang out owing to the proliferation of bars along the way. Broughton Street is the primary shopping destination with everything from one-of-a-kind boutiques to outlets for The Gap and H&M.

This district has the bulk of the museums and historic home tours and is where most visitors spend the bulk of their time.

The Victorian District
Just south of the Landmark Historic District is this charming neighborhood filled with, appropriately enough, beautiful Victorian architecture homes. The primary draw here, other than some good restaurants, is Forsyth Park, a 30+ acre oasis in the middle of it all. This is where you’ll find the Forsyth Fountain, often featured in photos of Savannah, and a weekly Saturday morning Farmer’s Market.

The Victorian district is mainly a residential area and there isn’t a lot to do here other than look at the houses but they are pretty stunning.

The Starland District
This artsy neighborhood doesn’t have defined boundaries, but the bulk of the things you’re going to want to see and do here are in the blocks around Bull Street between Anderson and Victory.  This is where you’ll find some fun restaurants and bars, Starland Yard, shops and boutiques including the fantastic Picker Joe’s antiques, and more.

Tybee Island
The Tybee Island Beachfront is located about 20 miles east of Savannah’s Landmark Historic District, facing the Atlantic Ocean. On the north end of the island are the historic lighthouse and battlements, while on the southern end you’ll find most of the restaurants, bars, shopping, pier, attractions, and more. This is not a Coney Island or Jersey Shore type of beach. It’s more laid back than that with fewer things to do other than enjoy the sand and the ocean.
