Laid out in 1837, this square was named for French Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette, who acted as George Washington’s aide de camp.

The fountain at the center of the square was installed in 1983 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the Georgia Colony.

Important buildings on the square including the Andrew Low house, built in 1849 and home to his daughter, Juliette Low, who founded the Girl Scouts.

207 Charlton is the childhood home of author Flannery O’Connor.

The Hamilton-Turner Inn was built in 1873 for a very wealthy jeweler and was the first home in Savannah to have electricity. It is said that people would come out to the square and wait for the owner to turn on the lights.
