What better place to put a World War II themed diner than in the American Legion building? The fortress like structure dates back to 1913, built for the Chatham Artillary and converted into an American Legion post in 1942, still active to this day.
The restaurant is a delirious throwback, with patriotic Americana from a time when everyone seemed to be on the same page about what that meant. There are photos, Rosie the Riveter and Uncle Sam posters, airplane models, and more livening up the otherwise no-frills space.
The stars of the menu are the burgers, which start at the classic lettuce, tomato, and onion favorite and builds up through BBQ, blackened with blue cheese and grilled onions, jalapenos and spicy queso, and even one with Spam and pineapple salsa. Although there is stiff competition, calling these the best burgers in all of Savannah is not going too far out on a limb.
There are a lot more options, though, including nachos, wings, sandwiches (from cheesesteak to “sh** on a shingle” – grilled beef with onions and country gravy), tacos, salads, and more. There isn’t a bum note in the bunch.
Prices are more than reasonable, especially considering how good it is. A full, satisfying meal can be done easily here for under $20.
A true Savannah favorite.
