Review

There is a place just like this in the town in which you live.  You know, the one with wooden booths, a big bar serving lots of beers, and reliable, and occasionally interesting, pub grub.

What makes this one stand out mainly is its history.  Serving since 1933, this is one of the oldest restaurants in Savannah and they’ve done a great job of keeping the past while staying up with the present.

The menu is comfort food with a lot of southern traditions thrown into the mix.  Starters include fried green tomatoes, Buffalo wings, and crabpuppies (crabcakes meets hushpuppies).  Then you move into soups, salads, local faves like shrimp and grits or a chili cheese dog, a bunch of burgers and sandwiches, seafood, and more.

There are some surprising items on the menu.  Check out the Greek wings and gyros, the bison or lamb burger, and the “Pimento Pig,” featuring pulled pork and pimento cheese.

While none of it will win any awards, it’s all hearty, well-prepared, and tasty, plus the prices are several bucks cheaper on average than many comparable Downtown Savannah restaurants.

Don’t forget about their 80 beers, over two dozen of which are on tap.
