Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room

Review
Yes, Mrs. Wilkes was a real person. Sema Wilkes took over a boarding house on Jones Street in 1943 and began cooking in the ground-floor dining room for guests using local farmer’s fare served family style. She ran the place until her death in 2002 at age 95!
Today, they continue that classic southern cooking style served family style with big heaping bowls of everything from fried chicken to collared greens and beyond.
COVID has changed the experience – the indoor dining room where you eat at big tables with strangers is no longer (it might come back some day) but they have outdoor tables for your group alone and you still get the big spread.
You have to get there early and stand in line by 9:30 or 10am at the latest or you risk not getting a table (they don’t take reservations).
