Review

There are two types of “fine dining” restaurants in Savannah. The newer, foodie-focused breed that have inventive menus like The Grey, Common Thread, and Husk, and the old-school favorites that serve hearty portions of steaks, seafood, chops, and the like. The awkwardly named 17Hundred90 Restaurant definitely falls into the latter.

Located on the first floor of the 17Hundred90 Inn, the low-ceilinged dining room is a beautiful throwback, with brick walls, original wood floors, and period detail that dates back to the early 1800s. The main room has a pianist providing background music and the whole thing feels like the kind of place you go to for a special occasion.

Starters include the typical steakhouse favorites of crab cakes and oysters Rockefeller, but throw in a few southern specialties like shrimp and grits or fried green tomatoes.

From the grill you can get a selection of chops – pork, lamb, and beef – or they have a nice selection of entrée options that include things like shrimp scampi, chicken parmesan, jambalaya, and salmon.

The selections we sampled – the fried green tomatoes, the crab stuffed mushrooms, pork chops, lamp chops, and a few drinks – were good, but not fantastic. It was difficult to pinpoint what was holding it back from being great, but it felt like the quality and preparation were not up to the level you’d expect from a “fine dining” restaurant and the general perception was that they were coasting on their reputation.

Prices are reasonable for the concept of the menu if not the execution. Most entrees fall in the $26-$45 range and come with sides that can be subbed out for others they offer.

A classic that needs to up its game to stay in the competition.
