Review

With a few exceptions, mostly in the newer Plant Riverside District, the bulk of the restaurants along River Street are not exactly what you’d call fine dining establishments.  They cater to tourists and while the food is usually satisfying, it’s usually only satisfying and not adventurous or exceptional.  But sometimes you need a good, safe, comfort-food meal and places like the Boar’s Head Grill & Tavern are ready and eager to help you out with that particular craving.

Despite its familiar name, this simple tavern style restaurant is not related to the meat purveyor or other Boar’s Head restaurants. Instead its a local mainstay, having been in business in some form or another, under different chefs and owners, since 1959.  It’s in a historic building by River Street, an old cotton warehouse with dark wood, lots of exposed stone and brick, and some seafaring decor giving it a vaguely pirate vibe.

The menu is wide-ranging but simple with burgers, salads, pastas, and sandwiches at lunch and a more substantial entrees like chops, chicken, and seafood at dinner.  While not at all adventurous or Insta-worthy, it’s solid, hearty food to satisfy big appetites.  The pork chop with peach chutney was quite good and you can never go wrong with one of their half-pound, ground-chuck burgers.

Prices are reasonable.  Everything on the menu at lunch is under $20 and only a couple of things break the $30 barrier at dinner.

This isn’t a destination restaurant, but if you’re in the area and are trying to choose from the dizzying array of options along River Street, this is probably one of your best bets.
