Review

With the exception of those in the newer Plant Riverside District, most of the restaurants along River Street are geared toward tourists and aren’t the kinds of places where you’re going to find the highest of haute cuisine. Having said that, you can often find very hearty, affordable, and satisfying meals along the riverfront and Olympia Cafe is good place to start your search.

The restaurant is divided into two sections – a cave-like sit-down area with a handful of tables and some obligatory Greek decor and an “express” section, where you can get it and go.  If it’s nice outside, maybe grab your grub and go find a nice bench along the river for better ambiance.

The menu is the same no matter which way you go, filled with authentic Greek specialties, both those you’ve heard of and those you probably haven’t.  Start with the dolmadakia, stuffed grape leaves with tzadziki sauce; tiropitakia, which is basically fried dough and feta cheese; skordalia, mashed potatoes with garlic pita bread; or go more familiar with a gyro.  A variety of salads, soups, and entree portion gyros and kabobs (the souvlaki, tender pork in a pita, is very good gives you some good options or you could go directly for the traditional main courses like moussaka (baked eggplant), spanakotriopita (spinach cheese pie), or pastitsio (baked macaroni and beef).

And becasue this is River Street and they don’t want to scare off the less adventurous tourists, they also have pizza, pasta, steaks, and seafood.

Prices are moderate and the service is good.

Is it the best Greek you’ll ever taste?  Probably not, especially if you’ve been to, you know, Greece, but it does hit that trifecta of attributes that you can find on River Street if you look for it: hearty, affordable, and satisfying.
